Frequently Asked Questions

1. What should I learn?

You should start with learning and internalising the basic fundamentals (dashing, Dash Jumping, ZMC, using the vents for traversal) with proper usage (e.g. not spamming dash and instead Dash Jumping).

After learning the basics, you should then transition into more advanced techniques (HMC, Zip Dashing, Corner Boosting) and trying to incorporate them into regular gameplay. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:18

2. Why did the Deadlock Movement Doc move to a wiki?

Multiple reasons.

  1. Google Docs. Staying was a bad idea; Google could decide to completely nuke the doc and months (if not years) of work could be gone in an instant. Google Docs was laggy for the end user and for the editor (compsoter): viewing and editing was painful to even start. With Google Docs, every editor had to be manually approved by me (compsoter); with the change to wiki, we can now allow people to self register and edit without my manual addition.
    1. Formatting on the Google Doc was painful; most of the document was done using tables with a border and padding of 0px; this created lots of lag, and I had to constantly battle Google Docs to get the layout I want.
    2. If I were to continue with the Google Doc, at some point it would become impossible to maintain.
  2. Mobile compatibility. The old Google Doc was incredibly mobile hostile; with the change to a wiki with dynamic HTML and CSS that changes on device width, mobile phones will be supported.
  3. Reach. The old Google Doc had reach problems; it was not search-indexable and had to be found either through slogging through Discord logs or through word of mouth. With the website, you'll be able to find our write-ups through web searches.
  4. Licensing. My biggest worry was that someone would steal all the information on the doc and make money off my work (the former has already happened to some extent, with video creators sometimes stealing information off the doc without proper attribution). With the website, I can enforce a license that disallows commercial use.
  5. Translations. I have gotten DMs about Ukrainian and Spanish translations, but they typically die out through lack of usage (if they even get off the floor). With the wiki, there is finally a centralised place for the to live. Monster_domosed is currently working on a Russian translation on the wiki (if you want to add a translation, DM compsoter on Discord)
  6. Collaboration. For most of the Doc's existence, I was the main writer (95% of the Doc was handwritten by me1). It was impossible for me to continue on this pace for nearly a year for what was mostly on my own, struggling with burnout, my education, my job and my social life. Because of the nature of Google Docs, if I added more editors I'd have to essentially keep an eye on the Doc 24/7 to maintain quality, which is why I kept it to a very small circle of people. With the wiki, I can finally rest and be a little hands off.

These are just some of the reasons for the move. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:17

3. Can I use the wiki in my own projects?

That depends. The wiki is licensed under the CC Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 4.0 International license. This means:

  • You are allowed to share (redistribute) and adapt (remix, transform and build upon) this wiki given that you give proper attribution and credit, it is a non-commercial work, and that your work is also under the same license.

This means that video adaptations are allowed with proper credit. If you are using the doc as a resource for a paid product (in any way), this is not allowed. This license is non-negotiable. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:56

4. How fast will this wiki be updated when patches come out?

Documented changes will be added relatively quickly (depending on timezones and release of the patch, this might take longer). Non-documented changes2) will take longer (depending on the obscurity, a week to months). — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:26

5. What will happen to tech that is patched out?

Tech that is patched out will be moved to its own section, have a disclaimer and removal history added to the top of the page and be removed from the sidebar. Pages will not be deleted. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:22

6. What's the plan for monetisation?

The plan for monetisation going forward is to set up a donation box. This will likely be within the ballpark of \$55—80 USD per year, \$40 USD for server costs throughout the year (an estimate based on current costs) and \$15 for the domain. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:29

7. Will the wiki use AI for writing?

No. Never. This is not up for debate. If any editor uses AI on the wiki they will be banned immediately. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:22

8. You should add creep mechanics/item builds/non-movement mechanics!

No. The current plan is to be a wiki exclusively on the technical mechanics and execution of movement techniques. This could change in the future depending on demand and (more importantly) willing number of volunteers. — compsoter 2025/04/17 09:18
